Adventures of a Masai Boy

The adventure life of most consultants and guides, especially those in tourism fraternity, commence as a joke during their tender ages. This is later developed into a hobby as they grow up doing almost the same type of activity that forms part of their life. Take an example of an orphaned Masai boy who grew up looking after cattle. In Kenya, Masai is one of the 42 ethnic tribes who have managed through thick and thin to maintain their traditional African culture. Their lives revolve around cattle rearing and migrating from one region to another in search of water and pasture for the large herds of cattle. Just imagine this young boy of 12 years for instance, alone in the thick bushes of Masai Mara, with all the risks of the black-maned lion or an aggressive rhino emerging from any direction!
Once in a while this has always happened, and a huge battle between the Masai boys has always come to pass. Surprisingly enough, the boys have always survived the fights with remarkable lion scratches that give them a right of passage from childhood to adulthood. After this memorable fight and a close encounter in this Kenya’s land of wildebeest migration, with a very high concentration of wild animals, the boy would definitely learn a lot about the animal’s behaviour and how to go about any sort of confrontation while in the bush.
Both the Kenya and Tanzania Masai communities share quite a number of similarities and follow the same cultural activities that make them different from the rest of the communities. The boys spend most of their days in the bush, feeding on wild fruits, dried meat and milk for their lunch. They know so many birds, that they can easily tell the species of different birds just by listening to their sounds.
Most of them actually track hyenas and wild dogs which sneak into their homes at night and attack their sheep and goats. Do you know how they do this? they look at the foot prints and sniff the leaves of shrubs that the wild animals might have walked through and this has always worked out for them perfectly well!!
They can make the best and the most sincere tour guides and safari consultants in the tourism field.…

Pet Dental Disease : More Than Bad Breath!

It seems that today?s pets are more pampered than ever. Pet owners indulge their furry friends with premium food and treats, colorful toys, and even dress them in posh, fashionable outfits. They get them kitty condos and obedience lessons, vitamins and vaccines. But there is one aspect of pet care that even the most loving owners tend to miss: Pet dental disease prevention.

Dental care is one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of pet ownership, but ignoring it can not only cause major dental disease in pets, it can lead to more serious health problems including heart, kidney and lung disease. Shockingly, according to the American Veterinarian Dental Society, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show some signs of gum disease by age 2.

There are many types of dental diseases that dogs and cats can acquire. The most common are :

? Gingivitis

? Tooth abscess, especially of the carnaissal teeth

? Cavities

? Cracked teeth

? Worn down teeth

So what should a conscientious pet owner do to prevent dental disease in their pet?

It?s essential that dental care in pets, as with people, be preventative. Your pet?s teeth should have the tarter scraped off of them every 3-6 months, and be professionally cleaned under general anesthesia at least once a year.

The most important thing you can do at home to stave off dental disease is to brush your pet?s teeth. Brushing regularly will keep gums healthy and prevent tartar build up. Obviously, some pets will be more complacent about having their teeth brushed than others. Cats especially tend to balk at the idea of human fingers poking around their pearly whites. In these cases, you can slowly get your pet comfortable with tooth brushing by progressing from a finger, to a gauze pad or cotton swab (perhaps dipped in their favorite treat) on the gums, to eventually using a soft bristled toothbrush. Remember to always properly restrain your pet before brushing their teeth to avoid problems.

If you think these precautions seem over the top or unnecessary, think again: Studies have shown that taking measures to prevent dental disease in your pet may add as much as 5 years to their life. So go ahead and buy Spot that fancy collar and splurge on a new toy for Tabby. Just don?t forget to pick up that toothbrush while you?re at it!…

Dog Behavior Training – Dog Aggression Toward Its Owners

A dog that growls at and/or bites its owner does so for some reason, even if the behavior appears to be “unreasonable” to the owner. If your dog displays aggressive behavior towards you, for the safety and welfare of you, your family and your dog, it’s important to find out why as quickly as possible.

Call your vet right away and schedule an appointment for a complete medical examination. Talk with your vet about testing your dogs hormonal balance, neurophysiologic functions and allergies. The test results may reveal the underlying cause. This has been especially helpful in dogs that have mood swings.

When growling or biting has erupted as a consequence of scolding or punishment for behavior such as chewing, jumping, general unruliness, or overprotection of food, these problems must be dealt with swiftly and firmly to correct the aggression it is initiating.

As the dogs owner, you must understand that your dog growls or bites at you as a result of defensive feelings. Even the dog that growls when ordered off the couch is reacting defensively, as it feels its dominance status has been threatened.

If scolding and punishment provoke aggression, your dog is reacting to a perceived threat to its physical safety. In either of these situations, your own threatening behavior may be producing negative results.

If the results of a medical examination show no signs of a medical condition that would be causing this behavior, you will have to examine your own behavior closely to determine what you are doing to make your dog feel threatened.

If you can’t hire the services of a professional, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Secrets Of A Professional Dog Trainer by Adam Katz for indepth instructions on dog behavior training. This ebook is available on my blog.…

Simple Pet Care Tips

There are many pet owners who spend a major part of their monthly budgets at the local pet clinic. These pet owners have to take a few simple steps to ensure their pets are healthy and free from problems.
Preventative care of your pets is important if you want to keep your pet healthy and reduce the medical bills of your pet. The article will concentrate care of cats and dogs as they are the most common pets.
It is imperative that you give your pets Flea Medicine if you take them outside. You can buy flea medicine at a local store or at a pet shop. You can also buy them online as there are many websites that sell these medicines. These medicines are easy to use as you just have to follow the directions that are mentioned on the pack. People who have sensitive skin can use gloves when they apply this medicine. Even though you don’t have to touch the medicine with your hand it is in your interest that you use gloves.
To improve social acceptability of your pet and to improve your bonding with your pet, it is important you give your pet their weekly bath. Your pet will enjoy the bath even more if you join them in the shower. Avoid taking your dog to the grooming parlor for their weekly bath as it is expensive and does nothing to improve your relation with your pet.
It is important that you clip the nail of your pet regularly. This can easily be done if you have the right tools. Don’t buy complicated stuff that you find difficult to use. It is in your interest to introduce clippers early as most pets don’t like this procedure. When clipping the nails of your cat wrap them in a towel to save your hands from starches.
Brushing your dog can help in restoring the vibrant coat of your pet. It is a good idea to remove the extra fur as it helps the skin to breath and strengthens their immune system.…

How To Be Your Dog’s Leader

We have talked before about the importance of learning your dog’s psychology to be able to train him properly. Imagining the solutions just won’t do the trick.
Today we will show you what teaching your pet who the leader is. You have probably seen Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer, talk about you being the leader of the pack all the time. Well, that is exactly what I am talking about.
When you lead your dog you are communicating your leadership and at the same time, you are teaching him/her good manners. Keep in mind that the animal learns better when reinforced than when punished, and that is something very frequently forgotten when trying to train the animal.
Not all dogs respond the same way to all positive reinforcements, but one that hardly ever fails is food. Try to keep some sort of treat around at the beginning. This will be substituted later with praise and caresses and it will mean the same to your pet. Love is always the best reward!
There is also a very important point one must never forget. Dog owners also have to learn to be the leader of the pack. That does not necessarily come naturally to us, even though we think the opposite.
Forcing is not leading! Transmitting your knowledge of what you are doing to your dog in a calm way has always the best results. We are not trying to impose, but to teach.
Whatever you want to teach your dog has to be based on his/her respect for you and his/her desire to follow your lead.
If you are willing to take the necessary time to train your dog at the beginning, because you certainly want to have a well behaved pet, you must never forget that persistence is of the utmost importance. It is easy to get tired and to feel sometimes like you want “to throw in the towel”, but that way, do remember that you will always lose the fight!
If you have children, you probably know what I mean. Not even us humans learn anything the first time we try it. We have to repeat and repeat until it is embedded in our brain, so consider this every time you are faced with the need to give your dog the next lesson.
You will lead by example, so you have to learn to be a good leader first!…

Will There Be Pets in Heaven?

This topic has been debated time and time again. And the answer still seems to be a mystery. Some of us have pets that are considered family members and have brought love and attention to our lives. When we get home from work, they are always there to greet us with licks of love and wagging tails of delight or purrs of approval. Pets today come in all forms, such as: dogs, cats, fish, turtles, snakes, guinea pigs and the list goes on. Our children have grown so attached to their pets, that they may even treat them like a brother or sister. Unfortunately there comes a time when we all must die. And when a pet dies, do they go to heaven or not?
The Bible does not give an explicit teaching on whether pets or animals have souls or if they will go to heaven. But the Bible does say that both man and animals have the breath of life. Genesis 2:7 says, “the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” God shows us that man is a compound being, having a body and soul distinctly and separately created. And Genesis 1:30 says, “And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all creatures that move on the ground- everything that has the breath of life in it – I give every green plant for food. And it was so.” The difference between humans and animals is that man was made in the image of God and animals were not. We are capable of spirituality with our mind, our emotions and our will or choices. Genesis 1:26-27 says, “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” We have a part of our being that will continue even after death. Since animals were not created in the image of God and are not capable of spirituality, this difference could mean that pets do not continue in existence after death or go to heaven.
Because the Bible doesn’t really speak on this subject, we should consider that when God created animals in Genesis 1:25, he said “they were good.” When the new earth and heaven form, we could find animals there. Because of his good creation, he may not want them destroyed. During the millennial or thousand year kingdom, Isaiah 11:6-9 says, “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down and the yearling together, and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the hole of the cobra, and the young child put his hand into the viper’s nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” This scripture suggests that animal life will exist during this time.
We don’t know all of what God’s plan will be concerning our pets in heaven. We would love to know that our pets, that we loved so dearly here on earth, will dwell forever with us in heaven. But who knows? Because our God is a just God, whatever decision He makes on this issue, will be in complete agreement with His will in heaven.…
